I am writing from the English countryside, based in Devon. A dual-timeline novel — London/Brisbane 2010 & Devon in the 1950s & 60s
When Elsie Dermott visits Granbury House, a fading Devon estate, she meets its enigmatic owner Edmund Ashbourne. What starts as a brief encounter unfolds into a story which will follow Elsie to the other side of the world.Building a new life with the man she loves in Australia, Elsie receives a commission from Edmund to write the memoir of his late wife — Rosalind.As Elsie delves into Rosalind's story, she falls under the spell of a woman whose life inexplicably mirrors her own. Unable to shake Rosalind's voice, she must finally reckon with herself - and make an impossible choice.Moving between a Devon country house in the 1950s and Brisbane in 2010, The Soul of the Rose is a novel about the complexities of love, the meaning of home, and the difficult choices we make that reveal who we truly are, or need to become.
